What is a Nootropic?
A Nootropic is defined as a substance that may enhance cognition & memory and facilitate learning in healthy individuals. Often referred to as smart drugs or cognitive enhancers, Nootropics are generally herbs, vitamins and natural extracts. In 2015 the global nootropics market was valued at USD 1.35 Billion and is expected to reach over 6 Billion by 2024, expanding at a CAGR of 17.9% from 2016 to 2024.
Nootropics aim to boost brain function through various methods, most predominantly by increasing the production and signalling of various neurotransmitters. When neurotransmitters are able to send signals more efficiently, you may experience improvements in mood, energy, concentration, attention span, processing speed and ability.
Some Nootropics show effects of vasodilation and increased the blood flow, thus supplying your brain with more oxygen, nutrients, and glucose and causing an almost immediate uplift in energy, mood and ability. While other nootropics are neuroprotective and continued supplementation can lead to long lasting improvement to the health and functioning of your brain.
If you are striving to operate at your peak mental performance, regain your youthful energy and vitality or give yourself a cognitive boost a nootropic supplement may be for you.
What is Vi-Brain? Vi-Brain is a daily nootropic formulated and manufactured in The UK in accordance with GMP Guidelines and in a BRC accredited lab, Vi-Brain is a bespoke stack containing 9 synergistic active nootropic ingredients formulated to compliment each others benefits and life cycle.
Vi-Brain Nootropic Formula Breakdown
Alpha Glycerlphosphrocholine is the most efficient Choline prodrug at conferring dietary choline to the body after oral ingestion. Choline is an essential nutrient for supporting and improving cognitive function. Alpha GPC is cited mainly for its Neuro-Protective abilities and its effects of Memory & attention. Alpha-GPC users often report cognitive stimulation, improvements in speed of thought and mental clarity whilst research has shown an AcetylCholine precursor to reduce some cases of Cognitive Decline *(1).
Choline rich foods include eggs and red meat and lack of this nutrient has been linked to mental defects and inabilities to flush toxins and poisons out of the brain.
Panax Ginseng is the most researched member of the Ginseng Family. Ginseng is a plant that is found predominantly in North America and Eastern Asia. Heralded in medicine for centuries Ginseng’s benefits have been noted for a plethora of uses including; enhanced memory, vitality, libido and cognition along with reduced fatigue, anxiety and depression. Ginseng has even been used to treat certain types of cancer.
Panax Ginseng is a powerful natural adaptogen that has shown in studies to improve cognitive performance during sustained mental activity *(2), improve quality of life and social functioning *(3) and has notable effects on increasing libido *(4). Further studies have found Ginseng to improve blood flow *(5) and reduce cognitive decline *(6).
Bacopa Monnieri is a traditional herb used for Alzheimer's disease, improving memory, anxiety, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), allergic conditions, irritable bowel syndrome, and as a general tonic to fight stress. Bacopa is predominantly found in the wetlands of India, Africa and Southern America. Some studies have shown Bacopa to improve word recal & prevent rises of anxiety *(7), Improve learning abililty *(8) and improve memory in both healthy persons and those in cognitive decline *(9). Bacopa interacts with dopamine and serotonin systems, but its main mechanism concerns promoting neuron communication. It does this by enhancing the rate at which the nervous system can communicate by increase the growth of nerve endings (dendrites).
N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine (NALT) is a highly bio-available form of L-Tyrosine. L-Tyrosine is a naturally occurring amino acid that is responsible for producing noradrenaline and dopamine in the brain (noradrenaline enables the body to perform well in stressful situations whilst dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter linked with reward-motivated behaviour). NALT is popular amongst busy professionals and college students due to its reported ability to enhance cognition during periods of sleep deprivation and its perceived ability to aid performance under stress. Tyrosine has been shown in some studies to improve cognition during extended wakefulness *(10) reduce effects of stress and fatigue on cognitive performance *(11), preserve working memory *(12) and reduce environmental stress *(13).
Acetyl-L Carnitine (ALCAR) an Acetylated form of the amino acid L-Carnitine. L-Carnitine is present in protein rich foods such as red meats, chicken, lamb and some dairy produce. Its primary role is to aid the metabolism of fat throughout the brain and body and thus ALCAR is used for mental energy, brain signalling, alertness and memory. ALCAR is considered an antioxidant that removes toxins from the brain and cells, helping to strengthen neutrons, repair receptions and fight against brain aging by strengthening the myelin sheaths that surround and protect our nerves. Importantly for our formula, studies have shown in some cases Carnitine can significantly improve attention *(14), increase blood flow *(15), increase cognitive status and physical functions in certain demographics *(16), reduces cognitive fatigue and improves cognitive focus *(17).
Caffeine & L-Theanine
Caffeine is a powerful stimulant and Nootropic, it is the most widely used stimulant on the market and is believed to be consumed daily by up to 90% of Americans. Caffeine sensitises Neurons and provides mental summation, it is shown to be a reliable and effective method of producing stimulative effects *(18).
L-Theanine is an amino acid found primarily in green tea, it is considered slightly relaxing but non-sedative. A combination of L-Theanine and Caffeine is noted to be synergistic in promoting cognition and attention, when consumed together these substances have been shown to reduce susceptibility to distraction *(19) promote alertness *(20) and improve performance on cognitively demanding tasks *(21).
Vitamin B6 is essential for proper brain development and function, it is shown to produce the mood regulating hormones serotonin and norepinephrine which may be important for nerve communication whilst it enables the body to use and store energy from protein and carbohydrates. Vitamin B6 rich foods include Pork, Poultry Fish & Bread. Daily intake of Vitamin B6 is advised for digestive, immune, muscular & nervous system function.
Preliminary research has linked Vitamin B6 to reducing risks of degeneration and stroke, seizures, chronic pain and depression whilst deficiencies in Vitamin B6 are linked to fatigue, loss of coordination and mental confusion.
Vitamin B12 is shown to be essential for synthesis of DNA, RNA and Neurotransmission, along with the maintenance of the protective myelin sheets around neutrons. Deficiencies can lead to nerve disease, imbalance and cognitive decline.
B12 is advised daily to aid cerebral circulation, neurotransmission and mood regulation. Foods such as Shellfish, Liver and Crabs are notable high in their Vitamin B12 content and those who do not intake enough on a daily basis may feel tired and lethargic.
